The Broadwalkers - Newspaper
In the winter of 2021 as the UK emerged from the Covid crisis more shops were shutting and the high street continued to die. Near where I live in Bristol a small 1970s shopping centre described that situation as well as any other, sat at the confluence between gentrification and one of the biggest council estates in the UK. Only a handful of shops survived where I took on an old ShoeZone and set it up as a free portrait studio. The photos in this newspaper are of self-selected people and their answers to questions about their hopes and fears. Accompanying the images is an introduction written by former Knowle based social worker & author Matt Stephens, giving context to the people that use the centre and the history of the area.
